Abstract

This study aims to investigate and determine the variation of fiber direction and variation of curing time of coconut fiber composites on tensile strength. The materials used to manufacture composites are epoxy resin and coconut fiber. Composites are made using the hand lay‐up method. Coir fiber‐reinforced composite test specimens were cut according to ASTM D3039 standard for tensile test specimens. The variables of this study were the orientation of the fiber direction and the variation of different lengths of time. The orientation of the fiber direction used is unidirectional fiber and random fiber then the second parameter is the variety of different curing times, namely 0 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 50 minutes with the exact temperature of 100C, by heating the specimen using an electric oven, then carried out a tensile test with the Universal Testing Machine. The highest tensile strength value was 33.72 MPa in the specimen with random fiber orientation, and the curing time was 10 minutes. while the lowest tensile strength value was 19.13 in the specimen with the fiber orientation in the same direction, and the curing time was 0 minutes.
